He went on to complete West Philadelphia High School and volunteered for the US Army 1958-1960, serving as part of the Honor Guard for the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe based in Paris. +Very Reverend Arthur Evans Liolin
September 28, 2023
June 1943 – September 2023
The Very Reverend Arthur Evans Liolin died peacefully September 28, 2023 in Quincy, Massachusetts in the presence of his family.
Serving as Chancellor of the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America for over a half century, Fr. Liolin was known widely in his extended community for his diplomacy as well as his kind, loving presence in service to his ministry, his congregation at Saint George Cathedral of Boston, and the broader Albanian and Albanian-American communities.
Born and raised in Jamaica Estates, Queens, New York, Arthur played accordion as a youth, and was an accomplished organist at Saint Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church. His dedication to the Albanian Archdiocese began at an early age when he and his brother, beloved departed Archbishop Nikon, took their lessons in service from their parents Evans, (a founder of St. Nicholas Albanian Orthodox Church of New York, and founder of the Theological Student Fund of the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese) and Helena (former Choir Director at St. Nicholas). Arthur graduated Jamaica High School where he swam and became co-captain/city champion on the rifle team, but was particularly devoted to his science projects. After studying music performance at Julliard, Arthur fueled his passion for medicine at Sloan Kettering which inspired his eventual pre-med studies at Princeton University. During these bright college years, he traveled to Europe, studying at the Albert Schweitzer College in Switzerland. While overseas, he visited Anatolia, and traveled through Turkey where he bought and rode a horse into Greece. He visited a monastery atop Mt. Athos, explored Macedonia and other Balkan countries, where he met with Albanian speaking peoples, and cultivated his appreciation of Byzantine Orthodox Art. Upon his return to the United States, Arthur changed his focus from pre-med to Art History and Religion, became an award-winning painter, and subsequently graduated from Princeton, Summa Cum Laude, a proud member of the Class of 1967. In the summer of 1970, he married Margaret Ann Becker, and soon thereafter, was ordained a priest by Bishop Stephen Lasko.
In his more than fifty years of service to the Church, Fr. Liolin lovingly guided and counseled members of his home congregation through baptisms, weddings, funerals, weekly liturgies and the services of the liturgical year. His weekly sermons educated and inspired churchgoers, stimulating deep personal contemplation and spiritual inquiry. He offered a modern-day investigation of personal ethics, traditional values, and cultivated a genuine sense of community and cultural belonging in a changing world.
In addition to his pastoral duties, Fr. Liolin served as the institutional historian of the Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese, holding nearly twenty offices including founder of the Fan S. Noli Library and Cultural Center, and founding President of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship at Princeton. He held membership in religious, ethnic and spiritual societies including the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and the American Association of the United Nations. During the 1980s and 1990s, in the absence of a bishop, Fr. Liolin served as de facto spiritual leader. His service to the Church extended far beyond the Cathedral walls to the global Albanian community, where Fr. Liolin ably represented the Archdiocese to the outside world.
In 1988, 1989 and 1991, Fr. Liolin visited Albania three times. He became the first clergyman to officially enter formerly communist Albania since the closing of all houses of worship in 1967.
During his visit in 1991, after the fall of communism, he effectively reintroduced Christianity after a quarter century without religion, baptizing Albanians who had longed for their right to worship. He helped foster religious freedom and democratic change at public gatherings, creating opportunity for worship in twenty-two cities, towns and villages which drew up to forty thousand people on numerous occasions. During this missionary, medical and humanitarian visit to Albania, he joined an ecumenical group in Tirana, Albania which was the first such initiative by the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, meeting with Orthodox, Catholic, Muslim and Bektashi leaders only recently permitted freedom of worship. In 1992, he was received by the President of Albania, Parliamentary leaders, Foreign Ministry, the Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Justice and numerous cultural and non-governmental organizations to foster constitutional reform.
In the U.S., Fr. Liolin worked with American and Albanian government officials, encouraging the restoration of diplomatic relations after a fifty-year hiatus. He received delegations from Albania and Kosova representing their Ministries of Health, Education, Banking, Monuments, Culture, National Archive, and leaders of independent labor unions. In addition to other dignitaries, he was received by Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa and welcomed visiting artists, authors, scholars, and musicians to St. George Cathedral. As founding chairman of Albanian Humanitarian Aid, he guided the acculturation of new immigrant arrivals and served as consultant to varied educational, religious and historical foundations.
In addition to these widely known contributions to the local and global Albanian communities, Father Liolin penned over two dozen articles and essays in celebration and study of the Albanian people, and contributed to over forty-five conferences including a symposium at Harvard University and Perestroika Day at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts. Fr. Liolin held or received over twenty awards and scholarships, including an award for his abstract impressionist painting, Outstanding Senior Thesis at Princeton and the Rotary Award for service to the community.
Fr. Arthur enjoyed raising his children in Wollaston and Milton, Massachusetts. He is survived by his beloved family: his wife, Prifteresha Margaret Liolin; his children Evans and Elena Liolin, Emily Liolin and her husband Mark Owens; his grandchildren Nathaniel and Ella Carroll and Vivian Owens; his brother James Liolin, along with many cherished nieces, nephews and extended family.
Wake and Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 6th & 7th.

Robert Dardaris
May 1, 2023
After a long life filled with football, family and flowers, Robert “Bob” Dardaris, 94, passed away surrounded by his children on May 1, 2023 at Capital Health Medical Center in Hopewell, NJ. A native of Philadelphia who spent his first 73 years in the city, Bob was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High and a longtime machinist at Steel Heddle Manufacturing.
Unassuming, congenial and quick with a quip, Bob deeply missed his beloved wife of 50 years, Katherine (nee Stavrou), who passed away in 2005. They were first-generation Americans, whose parents had emigrated from Albania. They were married in Saint John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church in Center City and remained devoted members of the congregation. Bob and Kathy moved to Ewing NJ in 2001.
Bob was also predeceased by his parents Xenophone and Sophia Dardaris (nee Pogas), brother Charles and sister Helen Perotti. He is survived by his children Denise Bevans (Michael), Robert Dardaris (Peggy) and Gregory Dardaris (Christine), as well as grandchildren Kaitlin (Colin), Brooke, Gregory and Alex.
There was a time when hunting deer for a few days in the fall was the highlight of Bob’s year. And he still relished the chance to win a few dollars in a Saturday night poker game. But the perfect day began with a garden spade and a bag of bulbs, then a parade of children and grandchildren through his front door, a slow-cooker bubbling with red sauce, and the best seat in the house: the leather recliner in front of a flat-screen with helmeted behemoths colliding in brilliant color. Saturdays in the fall were reserved for Penn State, Sundays for the Eagles.
The man affectionately known as B.D., Dad, Bobaloo and Pop Pop needed little to be content, and he wasn’t particularly particular … except when it came to his homemade spaghetti and meatballs. Those canned tomatoes HAD to be the Tuttorosso brand. He would happily eat pasta every day. He would happily skip vegetables every day (and usually did).
Friends and family are welcome to attend his viewing 10am to 11am Monday, May 8th, at St. John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church. 237 N. 17th St. Philadelphia, Pa 19103. His funeral Service will take place at 11am in the church. His interment will follow at Lawnview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Saint John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church, 237 N 17th St, Philadelphia PA 19103 and at https://stjcaoc.org.

In 1960 Charles moved his dealership north on Broad Street and bought a Humble Oil gas station, allowing him to have an indoor showroom and repair facility. In 1962, he became a Volvo dealer, which he operated at the Broad Street location until 1981. In 1971 he opened a second location in Huntingdon Valley, PA. Charles went to work every day until the dealership was sold in 2017, and he subsequently retired at the age of 90. Charles was an avid fitness and nutrition buff, but did occasionally allow himself his signature drink, a V.O. Whiskey Manhattan. He also had a passion for running.
While working on Broad Street he would take his afternoon break by running around the perimeter of Hunting Park Recreation Center for three miles every day, then returning to work to finish the day at the dealership. On the weekends he was a familiar fixture on East River Drive where he ran along the bicycle path. Over the years he competed in over 20 Broad Street Runs and in the mid-1990s he finished the Philadelphia Marathon. Charles was known for always wearing a jacket and tie regardless of the day of the week or weather conditions. He often joked that he was born wearing a tie and it was how he was most comfortable. He was a devoted father to Kim and Charles, and grandfather to Max and Jack, the lights of his life. In honor of his 80th birthday, grandson Max insisted on wearing a suit and tie to his party, just like his grandpop.
Charles was devastated by Max’s passing in 2017 and often reflected on their time together. In recent years, grandson Jack helped to take care of Charles at his home in northeast Philadelphia. Charles is survived by his children, Kim (George) and Charles (Donna), his brother Richard, his grandson Jack, and several nieces and nephews.
Burial is private, a memorial service will be held at a later date at St. John’s Orthodox Church, 237 N. 17th Street, Philadelphia, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to planusa.org or sundaybreakfast.org.

Nick Zoto
January 1, 2021
May 29, 1937 – January 1, 2021 (AGE 83) It is impossible to count the number of people that Nick greeted, fed and came to know as friends over his 83 years. From Zoto’s Diner and his involvement in politics to his family and church, Nick touched the lives of many and has been a catalyst for change for all the things he held dear.
Nick was a past Parish Council Chairperson and was extremely active at St. John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church. In 1993 Nick was the recipient of the Knight of St. George Award. The KNIGHT OF SAINT GEORGE is the highest honor which can be bestowed upon a layperson in the Albanian Archdiocese. The recipient is well-recognized both for service to the parish as well as to the Archdiocese over an extended period of time. Nick will truly be missed by the Parishioners at St. John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church. MEMORY ETERNAL!
Born in Philadelphia to Albanian immigrant parents Anesti and Helen Zoto. Nick was the oldest of 4 children. His childhood centered around St John’s Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church, which his father helped found for the tight-knit and growing Albanian community. It was here he began to understand the important role that the church played in honoring their beliefs and heritage while they pursued the American dream.
He attended Bartram High school where he was class president in 1955. Compelled to fulfill his patriotic duty, he enlisted in the Army two days after his 19th birthday. After a tour in Korea, he was stationed in Ohio where he attended Youngstown University. He returned home in May of 1959, when his sister Nancy introduced him to Margaret Burdumi, who he later married. They spent the next 61 years together and had three children, Michael, Andrea, and Christopher. Shortly after Nick and Marge were married, he and his father purchased his first diner, Zoto’s Grove, located on Red Lion Road in northeast Philadelphia. From there he turned his sights to Center City, where he bought and ran the Red Oak on Walnut Street. As a die-hard Eagles fan, he was thrilled to eventually sell the restaurant to a former Eagles running back.
He then teamed up with his younger brother Steve to build the famous Zoto’s Diner, which has been operating for close to 50 years. In the late ‘70s, he decided to try his hand at French cuisine. Nick and Steve purchased Cobblestones in Society Hill. It was there that they celebrated the marriage of their youngest brother James. His contribution was recognized with the 1992 Restaurateur of the Year Award and in 1996 with a Keystone Award from the Philadelphia Delaware Valley Restaurant Association. After having achieved all these accomplishments, he felt the need to give back to the communities and organizations that helped him achieve his dreams. His love of business led him to the Philadelphia Small Business Advisory Council where he served as chairman from 1981-1983 under Mayor William J. Green. He continued as co-chairman until 1990 alongside Mayor W. Wilson Good, and as a member from 1990-1993 with Mayor Edward Rendell.
Nicholas served as delegate to the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. On October 6, 1986 he received a citation from the House of Representatives for serving as a delegate for Pennsylvania to the White House Conference on Small Business. Of all the accolades Nicholas received the one he was most proud of was his appointment in September 1985 as a member of the Presidents Commission on White House Fellowships. Working with Colin Powell, he marveled at the accomplishments of the candidates and seemed amazed that he was bestowed such an honor. He would say, “I’m just a kid from West Philly.”
In addition to his beloved wife Margaret, Nicholas is survived by his children: Michael Zoto and partner Jen Abramson of Huntingdon Valley, PA, Andrea Z. Shannon and her husband Senan of Cranbury, NJ and Christopher Zoto and his wife Marianne of Fountainville, PA, and his daughter-in-law Leslie Hickling-Zoto of Richboro, PA. He is also survived by his brothers: Stephen Zoto of Ambler, PA and James Zoto of Quakertown, PA and was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Gregory. He is also survived by his 6 cherished grandchildren Alyssa, Quintin, Senan, Meaghan, Nicholas and Alexa.
Due to current Covid-19 Pandemic, interment will be privately held by the family.

Jerrold Gaston “Jerry” Kane
October 26, 2019
Jerry Kane October 26, 2019. Jerrold Gaston “Jerry” Kane was the first-born of five children to Helen (Goodenough) and Arthur Jerrold “Jerry” Kane. Jerry was born in Manhattan and spent the first five years of his life in Queens. Jerry grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida with his mother, siblings, his Aunt Katherine “Kitty” Kane Gibbons and his favorite set of cousins. Growing up during the war, Jerry and his best friend and little brother Daniel “Danny” Kane worked many different jobs best suited for grown men and had little time for school during what Jerry fondly recalled as their misspent youth. This would serve young Jerry well as he left home for Arizona at age 14 with $5, a loaf of bread and a bologna. He would not return home. When questioned, Jerry was known to say “I have been without adult supervision of any kind since I was fourteen.”
In Phoenix, Jerry had a job as a soda jerk, worked the fields alongside migrant workers during planting and harvesting season, bought a car (he had an “incorrect’ driver’s license with an age of sixteen despite being fourteen and never having taken a driver’s test), rented an apartment, and occasionally attended eleventh grade. After that, Jerry drifted for a few years in the southwest with prolonged stops in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Jerry was known to have said “depending on what you think of the people in Las Vegas, I really was raised by wolves.”
After drifting and somewhat tiring of the wild life, Jerry sought to put down roots where his favorite aunt, Kitty, had moved with his cousins who he considered a second set of siblings. He moved to Philadelphia, where his roots became permanent. There, he worked at the Veteran’s Administration where he met Katherine Gregory who agreed to marry him because he resembled her favorite, Frank Sinatra. His drifting stopped and they were married for 59 years. Aunt Kitty thought Katherine civilized Jerry.
He worked at the VA while waiting for his number to be called at the police academy. His career in homicide happened almost by accident. A policeman had been murdered on Jerry’s beat, the regular homicide investigator was sick, and the young beat cop solved the murder within hours leading to his first promotion. Jerry was the youngest detective ever in the Philadelphia Police Department and once out of uniform was rarely seen without his fedora and rumpled raincoat. He spent most of his 44 years in the police department in the Homicide Division where he was known to bring his favorite “child” Buck E. Kane on occasion. Jerry had a whole second life in homicide, intermittently interrupted by his other true loves: bowling and poker. Jerry did not do things halfway, playing poker both with friends and in professional poker rooms across the country (I guess some Vegas stuck to the man who was known by fellow pros as “The Inspector”) and bowling 300 several times, once in Police League competition. He also became the Commanding Officer of the Homicide Division. When not indulging in his passions of murder and gambling, Jerry enjoyed watching the Phillies (he preferred the Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn variety) and Eagles (Jerry attended their 1960 Championship game) with his family. When Jerry completed forty years in the department, the department commemorated this anniversary by creating The Kane Award which is still given annually to “the archetype of the perfect homicide investigator – smart, fair, and relentless.” One of his many awards and plaques (this one from the Homicide Division) concludes with the sentence “There truly are eight million stories in the naked city, and only Jerry Kane knows them all.” After retirement, Jerry continued his life’s work as a member of the Vidocq Society, comprised of retired law enforcement officers from multiple agencies who look into both unsolved murders and wrongful convictions. Jerry was not simply a member, he was the recipient of their Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jerry was a quiet, loving husband, father, and uncle despite being surrounded by violence and murder in the other half of his life. He never brought it home or told his family work stories. The tough Inspector even liked gardening although he might not have admitted it. Jerry returned in his latter years with Katherine to the Daytona Beach area he loved so much as a child. Jerry is survived by his sister Sister Kathleen Kane, brother Douglas Kane, and his children Kathleen Patricia, Karen Lee, and Michael Arthur Christopher.
After Jerry completed his fortieth year, he could have retired at full pay. He worked for another four and a half years. One of his children questioned him about the wisdom of working so long for free. His answers sum up Jerry Kane: ”You’re wrong. If I had retired I’d get 100% pay. Since I was working I got to pay a city wage tax, a state income tax, and a few other fees. It cost me about 10% of my salary to work.” His child’s response was “I thought you were supposed to be smart.” He smiled and after a pause turned deadly serious and said “You’re wrong. I had the privilege of chasing and catching murderers and maybe preventing their next murder for only 10% of my salary. It was a bargain. It was a gift. The only thing I regret is retiring.”
He is the beloved husband of the late Katherine. Loving father of Kathleen, Karen, Michael.
Friends and family are welcome to attend his viewing from 10am to noon on Wednesday, 10-30-19, at St. John Chrysostom Church 237 N.17th St. Philadelphia. Funeral will take place at noon. Interment will be private.:
MEMORY ETERNAL
His Eminence, Archbishop Nikon
September 1, 2019
Archbishop Nikon(1945-2019). At eleven o’clock, Sunday morning (September 1, 2019) His Eminence Nikon, Archbishop of Boston, New England and the Albanian Archdiocese reposed in the Lord. Over the past years, His Eminence contended with throat and lung cancer. On the first day of Great Lent of this year (March 11), he underwent what he thought would be a minor procedure on his lung and was anticipating to return home that Friday. But unable to leave the hospital as planned, he was confined to a hospital bed until his repose. During this time he humbly and with dignity endured great suffering, ever trusting in God’s mercy and love while always maintaining his sense of humor and wit. Beneath his modest demeanor was a faith that carried him through his trials not the least being his inability to swallow for the two months following his surgery. Yet as his strength steadily declined and as he became anxious about not being able to carry out his ministry, those around him nevertheless began to observe and understand what Saint Paul meant about the power and glory of the resurrected Christ being revealed in his crucifixion. In his own weakness and in his death, our bishop teaches us that “just as we have borne the image of the man of dust,” in the resurrected Christ “we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.” (I Corinthians 15: 49) In Christ, death is swallowed up by new and eternal life. Indeed, our Archbishop Nikon’s death affirms and confirms this fundamental reality.
The Trisagion of Repose for His Eminence will be celebrated at Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral, 523 East Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127, on Wednesday, September 4, at 7:00 PM, with Calling Hours from 4:00-8:00 PM. On Thursday, September 5, the Funeral Service for a Hierarch will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, 165 Park Drive, Boston, MA 02215 at 6:30 PM. The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, will be celebrated on Friday, September 6, by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon, at 9:30 AM with the Trisagion for the Departed immediately following. :

Andigone "Andi" T. Steffa
February 18, 2017
Andigoni “Andi” T. (nee Ticco) Steffa, 92, of Warminster, a chocolatier who personalized Easter eggs for Wanamakers and Strawbridge & Clothier department stores in center city Philadelphia each Easter for more than twenty years, died at her home surrounded by family.
Mrs. Steffa, loving wife of the late Peter L. Steffa, M.D. and mother of Patricia L. Orphanos, Peter L., Jr., and Paulette M., grandmother of Anastasia Noll and Nicholas Orphanos, and great-grandmother of three, was born and raised in Jenkins, KY.
Mrs. Steffa graduated from Virginia Intermont College in June 1943. She worked in Bristol, Virginia before moving with her family to Philadelphia in December 1944, after the death of her father. Soon after, she became engaged to Capt. Peter L. Steffa, of the U.S. Army Medical Corp. They were married in September 1945, upon his return from serving during World War II.
Mrs. Steffa was a superb cook and baker, particularly of ethnic Albanian and Greek dishes and pastries, using recipes brought over from the old country, and taught to her by her grandmother and mother. She also learned cake decorating, and how to work with chocolate and marzipan, selling her fancy wares under the “Andi’s Candies” private label. As an outgrowth of being a chocolatier, Mrs. Steffa was employed by Asher’s Candies to personalize their Easter eggs in the weeks before Easter, first at Wanamaker’s and then for more than twenty years at Strawbridge & Clothier’s Food Court.
Andi was a testimony to her faith in God and love for people of all walks of life. She expressed her gratitude often and easily. She could be counted on to help those in need and always put herself last. On one of her last days, her daughter asked her if she wanted anything — meaning something to eat or drink. Andi’s reply was, “I’ve always had everything I’ve ever wanted, I am truly blessed — and — you are blessed too, remember that!” When asked if there was something more she wanted to share, she said, “Be kind to everyone. We are all God’s people — black, white, gay, straight, Christian, Jew, Muslim — we are all God’s people! We are all equal, no one is better than anyone else. Be kind to everyone.”
Mrs. Steffa was predeceased in death by her parents Michael G. and Polixeni Paphingi Ticco and siblings, John M., Milton M., and Martha W. Tzetzo.
Mrs. Steffa’s funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, February 27th, at Annunciation/Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church, 7921 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA 19027, preceded by a viewing at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge, PA.

NANCY GREGORY
February 24, 2015
Nancy Gregory was born in 1941 and enjoyed a happy life in her early years living with her three brothers and her mother and father until she met Ted Gregory in July 1962. Nancy and Ted were married in December 1962. Since that time they moved quickly and never stopped.
She began her marriage with a strong love that endured for 52+ years. From the beginning, she displayed artistic talent which she began to cultivate by enrolling in art classes at Akron University. Soon after Nancy and Ted married, they moved to France. She loved every day of her time in France, learning basic French as well as excelling at cooking. Upon returning to the US, and when children entered her life in 1965 and 1968, she postponed the development of her artistic talents in favor of raising her two sons. After the two boys reached their middle teens, she resumed her education, entering the University of Delaware to continue the development of her artistic talents, and in preparation for a career as an educator. She graduated with a BA in Art History and Education. She later earned a Masters degree in Education.
She began her career teaching third-grade at Warner Elementary School, a city school in Wilmington Delaware. She also taught fifth grade later on in her career. She was dedicated to improving the lives of her inner city students, and she felt love for the many students for whom she had a positive impact. She felt like she made a difference in the lives of many of these disadvantaged students, and this feeling helped keep her a dynamic force in the classroom. She received many notes and gifts from her students, often, long after the student had left Warner Elementary. Despite her success, after 15 years in the classroom, she began to think about a change, and when Ted retired in 1998 she decided to retire in 1999.
Nancy loved to travel, having lived in France with Ted, and having traveled with Ted to Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Thailand, France, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, England, Martinique, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Martins, Switzerland, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Albania, Hawaii and Albania.
One of her favorite vacation places was Saipan. This is not only because her son Matt was there, but also because of the great golf courses there. She once made a shot on a spectacular Greg Norman golf course, a par three about 150 yards across a chasm above the Pacific Ocean. Nancy put the ball on the green with Tee shot. She didn’t always play this well but she did remember this shot in particular, and she loved playing. She belonged to Dupont CC, Stone Harbor CC, Shadowood CC and she also loved to play other courses. She also enjoyed her membership at the Stone Harbor Yacht Club.
Nancy loved music, particularly the Beatles and Motown and she also loved classical. In particular, she loved Pavarotti and went to New York City to hear him.
Nancy also loved the seashore. She and Ted spent many a weekend at their beach house in Avalon with their children. After her sons graduated from college and entered law school, Nancy and Ted made the beach house their primary residence and spent summers there while spending the cold winter months at their house in Bonita Springs, Florida. Grandchildren Amelia and Hayden arrived, and they too spent summers at the beach and enjoyed trips to Bonita Springs.
Nancy loved children, both in her professional life and at home. At any family gathering or party, she could be found in the basement playing ping-pong or board games with all the children. With 28 neices and nephews, this was no small feat. Nancy grew especially close to her grandchildren, and she and Ted spent countless hours playing Monopoly, Dominoes, Crazy-Eights and other games with them.
Nancy was a competitor, and whether it was golf, tennis, ping-pong, Bridge or Monopoly, she was in it to win it. Ever gracious and a good sport, Nancy was also very quick with a verbal zinger which was always good for a laugh. While playing any game, she enjoyed trading barbs and zingers with her competitors, and was usually the life of the party as well.
She passed away peacefully at home in February leaving her husband Ted, her sons Mark and Matthew and three brothers. The funeral service will be held at 11am at St. John’s Orthodox Church on Friday, March 6. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11am in church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
KATHERINE KANE
November 10, 2014
Katherine was the first-born child of Ermione and Christopher Gregory from Korce, Albania. Their hope was for their children to be born in America; and their wish was granted when Katherine was born shortly after their boat arrived in America. Katherine grew up in Uniontown, Pennsylvania where she went to her parents’ flower shop after school every day and she was known to frequent the State Theatre and Metzler’s department store often on both the trip to and from the family store. She was an avid reader and claimed to have read the entire contents of the Uniontown Library from A to the letter Q. Daydreaming about Frank Sinatra and Ronald Colman prevented her from reaching “R”.
She quit her job at the gas company and accompanied by her friend Marian Laski struck out on their own to Philadelphia without money, a place to live, or any job prospects. This modern girl quickly fell in love with the city. She joined the Daughters of Penelope, eventually graduated from a room at the YWCA to an actual apartment, and landed a job at the Veteran’s Administration. There, she met a young man named Jerry Kane who she thought slightly resembled Frank Sinatra. Katherine and Jerrold soon married in 1955 immediately before Jerry entered the police academy. Katherine deeply loved and was very proud of her husband of 59 years who was a decorated Inspector of the Philadelphia Police Department, serving the department for over 44 years and working in the homicide division for over twenty years, primarily as the Commanding Officer. After her children were old enough to go to school, Katherine returned to work for the Philadelphia School District, cheerfully working in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city. She was transferred, not at her request, for one year to George Washington High School and actually appears in her son’s high school yearbook.
In her later years Katherine was a TCM addict who enjoyed recognizing the stars of her misspent youth as well as continuing her reading habit. Katherine remained an incredibly vigorous and active woman, gaining most of her exercise in grocery stores and the hallways of various shopping malls along the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. She often recuperated between these strenuous workouts in assorted movie theaters. Besides her friends and church, Katherine enjoyed trips to Europe and Florida with her family (except for the packing and cleaning part).
GEORGE TOUROS
Aug 3, 1932 – July 14, 2014
Beloved husband of Margaret. Longtime faithful parishioner at St. John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church. In 2012 George was awarded the Archdiocesan Herald of Saint Constantine and Saint Helena. The following letter was submitted recommending George:
George has been a parishioner of St. John Chrysostom the majority of his life – going on 80 years! He admits he was not very active for a portion of that time, but since 1998 he’s been going full steam. Approximately 12 years ago George was a member of “the retired guys club”, a group of retirees who dedicated a great deal of time and energy to renovating the parish office and Sunday school. In addition to being part of the club, George went a step further and created a “tool room” which he stocked with many of his own tools. Over the years the tool room has been a valuable resource for our parish.
Attending the Divine Liturgy each and every Sunday is the norm for our George. He receives Communion faithfully and is always there to assist with the task at hand. Each Sunday he greets our parishioners with a smile, handshake and hug. He cuts the Mesh and takes the Nameday tray to the parishioners celebrating their Nameday, and at the end of the Divine Liturgy passes the contribution basket among the parishioners.
After coffee hour and fellowship in our church hall George goes down to the office and assists with the “bookkeeping”. He counts the money collected, prepares a report and often times takes the money to the bank! He is at the church long after everyone has gone home.
George is a very humble man, never seeking attention or praise for the work he does. A few years ago George battled lung cancer and after successful surgery came back as strong as ever. He never complains about his own difficulties but is very willing to lend an ear and helping hand to anyone in need.
At our September 18, 2012, Parish Council Meeting we unanimously agreed that George Touros’ extraordinary service to Saint John Chrysostom Albanian Orthodox Church make him most Worthy to receive The Herald of Saint Constantine and Saint Helena.
